毛白楊為楊柳科、楊屬落葉大喬木，生長快，樹干通直挺拔，樹形優美，是一個優良的造林綠化樹種，毛白楊廣泛應用于城鄉綠化，其品種適應性強，主根和側根發達，枝葉茂密，優質，速生，豐產，為速生用材林，防護林和行道河渠綠化的好樹種。
      
    毛白楊是大名鼎鼎的落葉喬木，高達30米--40米，生長迅速，10年成才一點也沒問題，因木材輕而細密，淡黃褐色，紋理直，易加工，可供建筑、家具、膠合板、造紙及人造纖維等用。
      
    毛白楊樹干端直，樹形高大廣闊，頗具雄偉氣概，加上抗煙塵和抗污染能力強，也常被作為行道樹。楊柳科都是雌雄異株，毛白楊雄株花開得比較早，3月中上旬，葉子還沒長滿樹就掛滿黑色的“毛毛蟲”(楊柳科多數花序叫柔荑花序，像一個下垂的狗尾巴草花穗)，樹葉快長出來的時候黑色“毛毛蟲”就掉光了，所以雄株不飄絮。討人煩的楊絮是雌株惹的禍，剛開始雌株的花序也是黑色的像毛毛蟲，但“毛毛蟲”不掉，而是很快變成綠色，與葉子一起生長，等到4月中旬葉子長滿樹冠的時候它也開始飄絮了。
