煙葉屬于茄科，是一年生草本植物。原產美洲，明代萬歷年間傳入中國。在歷史上，煙葉種植一直被作為副業，建國后三十年間，本縣煙草生產業并未引起足夠的重視。1982年，河南省農林科學院煙草研究所在靈寶縣蘇村鄉（屬崤山地區）栽種優質煙，通過三年試種取得成功。
      
    靈寶縣海拔高，晝夜溫差大，雨量適中，土壤適宜，與云貴高原的自然氣候條件相似，對煙草的生長發育和優良品種的形成非常有利，靈寶煙葉形成了獨有的特點，尼古丁含量適中，外觀質量好，煙葉組織細致，油分充分，彈性好，單葉重5克以上色澤鮮亮，顏色金黃，香氣質好，吃味醇和。
     
    1985年，在三年試種的基礎上，縣委、縣政府按照調整農村產業結構的精神，在蘇村、五畝、朱陽、川口、尹莊、陽店、大王、寺河、陽平、程村、故縣和豫靈等十二個鄉大面值種植煙葉。


    
    Tobacco leaf belongs to solanaceae and annual herb. They are originally produced in American Continent and is spread into China in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty. They are tried succeffully in Lingbao in 1982 and began to cultivated widely in 12 villages in 1985.
      
    Lingbao County is located at high altitudes so that it has big temperature difference between day and night, proper rain and suitable soil which are beneficial for the growth of tobacco leaves. And also, Lingbao tobacco leaf produce its particular characteristics: containing enough nicotine, fine appearance, rich oil content, elastic, bright and golden color as well as good smell and flavor.
