獼猴桃古名萇楚,又名奇異果。遠在兩千五百余年前的《詩經·檜風》中就有:"隰有萇楚,猗儺其枝。"(檜在今新鄭、密縣、滎陽一帶)從而說明自古獼猴桃就產于河南。唐代南陽人岑參詩云:"中庭井欄上,一架獼猴桃"。由此知道當時已有人工栽培獼猴桃。又唐代的《本草拾遺》中說:"獼猴桃甘酸無毒,可供藥用。主治骨節風、癱瘓不遂、長年白發、痔病等"。明代李時珍在《本草綱目》中也記有:"其形如梨,其色如桃,而獼猴喜食,故有諸名。"從上述的記載說明我閃祖先對獼猴桃的形態、性質及醫療用途早有了解。
中華獼猴桃,是一種落葉藤木果樹,適應性強,海拔兩千米以下都能生長。屬陰性植物,忌強日照,多生于林緣和灌木叢中。一般三、四年開花結果,六、七年進勱入盛果期,壽命長達三十至六十年以上。獼猴桃葉呈卵形或圓形。夏季開花,花初期為白色,然后逐漸變黃。雌雄異株,蔓像葡萄。漿果秋季成熟,果呈卵形或接近球形,長約2.5-5厘米,幼果密被絨毛,熟后無毛,呈灰褐綠色,坐果率很高,每棵一般年產20-50斤,最高達200-300斤。果實酸甜可口,味道清香,具有甜瓜、草莓和柑桔混合一起的特殊風味,營養價值很高。
獼猴桃不僅是營養佳品,且有顯著的醫療效用。近代對其研究證明:它對肝炎、高血壓、心臟病、動脈硬化、燒傷均有一定療效。特別是具有抗癌、治療麻風病的作用。
