息半夏是息縣獨(dú)有的優(yōu)良中藥材品種，在二千多年前《禮記、月令篇》曾有關(guān)于半夏的藥用記載。在《本草綱目》等醫(yī)學(xué)著作中對(duì)半夏入藥的有關(guān)問題作了詳細(xì)、深刻的闡述。清嘉慶四年，息州志對(duì)此已有記載，1979年版《辭海》將半夏列為息縣特產(chǎn)。醫(yī)藥、醫(yī)療界對(duì)息縣所產(chǎn)半夏極為推崇，為了將它區(qū)別于另外產(chǎn)品，特意在半夏二字 之 前 冠—“息”字，稱為“息半夏”，以示對(duì)它的青睞。1914年3月，在 舊金山舉辦萬國商品博覽會(huì)上，息半夏因其個(gè)大、粉足、品質(zhì)優(yōu)良、療效顯著廣受外商歡迎。近年來，隨著市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)的快速發(fā)展，息半夏遠(yuǎn)銷日、韓及歐美市場(chǎng)，長期供不應(yīng)求，國內(nèi)各大藥市常年出現(xiàn)有價(jià)無藥的局面。息半夏以淮河、閭河沿岸出產(chǎn)的品質(zhì)為最佳，通過大量臨床試驗(yàn)和藥理檢測(cè)，9克息半夏相當(dāng)于外地半夏15 克藥效。多年來，息半夏以質(zhì)量地道，信譽(yù)卓著而馳名中外，在同類藥材中被視為珍品。據(jù) 《五十二病方》、《局方》、《仁齋直指方》和《金匱要略》等記載，息半夏入藥能夠治療咳痰喘急、肺胃虛寒、嘔吐眩悸、便秘泄瀉、小兒驚風(fēng)等癥，藥物實(shí)驗(yàn)有鎮(zhèn)咳、止吐解毒等功效，外敷可止痛消腫。
